Gwen John: Who Is She?

$12.00

An exciting 20-page full-color zine featuring one of my art sheroes.

Gwen was an artist overshadowed by her much more famous brother Augustus John and her ten year relationship with Auguste Rodin. She was a figurative painter from Britain who spent most her life living alone in France. She was drawn to expressions of a quiet and interior life. Her paintings are small in size and depict tidy corners of rooms or an anonymous single female figure reading a book or petting a cat. These still paintings defy the bravery and bold determination of heir maker. Gwen lived a daring and non-conformist life. I found her dedication and sacrifice to be an artist in the early 1900’s and through the World war to be very inspiring.

Historians wrote her off as a recluse, a cat lady, a dabbler in paint. There is so much still to learn about her and works to uncover. Lucky for us she was a prodigious letter writer and her story can’t be totally erased. Recent shows this fall have shone a light on her and brougt her back out of the shadows of history.

Read more about her and learn where you can see more in my zine. Volume 8 of 2023.

“Who is She?” has been born out of the frustration of not having been exposed to many women artists in art history. This booklet is the result of my determination to research, learn, laud, and publish the stories to balance the traditional male-dominated narrative.

This (limited edition) printing corresponds to a YOUTube Live presentation given in September 2023 on the inspirationartsgroupintl. channel.
